Dr. Rusty Smith holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from Appalachian State University, a master’s degree in trumpet performance from the North Carolina School of the Arts, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree with a post graduate certificate in jazz studies from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Dr. Smith can frequently be seen and heard in the horn sections backing the Four Tops and the Temptations, on stage with Winston-Salem’s Camel City Jazz Orchestra, and in the orchestra pit for numerous national Broadway touring company shows. He has performed with such artists as Denny Dias (founding member of Steely Dan), Olivia Newton-John, Aretha Franklin, Franki Valli and the Four Seasons, the Spinners, Steve Lawrence, Bernadette Peters, the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra and many others. He has toured both in the US and abroad with the Ray Charles tribute I Can’t Stop Loving You, the world premier tour of Ziegfeld: a Night At The Follies, the Motown Christmas Spectacular, and the Motown Legends Tour. From 1997-2005 he was the trumpet player for the Louise Mandrell Theater in Pigeon Forge, TN.
In addition to his duties as adjunct instructor of applied trumpet at Appalachian State University, Dr. Smith also serves as an adjunct professor at Elon University, High Point University, and Guilford Technical Community College.
