Cathy McKinney, PhD, LCAT, MT-BC

Cathy McKinney, professor and coordinator of music therapy, teaches in the areas of music therapy in mental health, music therapy in health care, clinical improvisation, supervision, advanced topics in music therapy, and the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music (GIM). A Fellow of the Association for Music and Imagery, she is the editor of the Journal of the Association for Music and Imagery. Dr. McKinney has published in music therapy, psychology, and behavioral medicine journals. Her primary area of research is the psychological and physiological effects of GIM in healthy adults as well as in adults with medical or mental disorders. The Board of Governors of the University of North Carolina awarded her the Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2009.

A past president of the Association for Music and Imagery, the Southeastern Region of the National Association for Music Therapy (SER-NAMT), the Music Therapy Association of North Carolina, and the Association for Music and Imagery, Dr. McKinney has served in numerous positions at state, regional, and national levels in music therapy. She is a past member of the Board of Directors of American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) and past chair of the AMTA Education and Training Advisory Board. Dr. McKinney received both the Service Award and the Research Award from the SER-NAMT. In 2003, AMTA honored Dr. McKinney with the Award of Merit.

Dr. McKinney has extensive clinical experience across a wide range of populations, including adults with mental disorders, healthy adults, adults with medical conditions, individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, children and adolescents with emotional and behavioral disorders, and older adults with dementia and other neurological conditions. She has presented her work at state, regional, national, and international conferences.

Dr. McKinney received the Bachelor's degree with majors in psychology and music from Duke University before completing the Equivalency in music therapy at Western Michigan University. She received an interdisciplinary Master of Arts in music therapy from the University of Northern Colorado and the Ph.D. in interdepartmental studies (music therapy and behavioral medicine) from the University of Miami, where she was a University Doctoral Fellow.

She is the founding director of the Appalachian State music therapy program. In addition, she is a founding member of the Appalachian Expressive Arts collective, an interdisciplinary faculty group of artists and arts therapists who use dreams and the creative process for personal and professional growth.
