Dr. Joseph Amaya is a full professor of voice in the Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University, where he has taught since 1989. He has been instrumental in developing the opera workshop program and has made guest solo appearances with various ensembles, including the Appalachian Chorale, University Singers, Men's Glee Club, and Wind Ensemble.
Prior to his tenure at Appalachian State University, Dr. Amaya served at the University of Texas at Arlington, Trinity University, and the University of Georgia, where he helped establish the opera workshop program. Throughout his career, Dr. Amaya has worked with notable conductors, coaches, and teachers, including Nadia Boulanger, Joseph Flummerfelt, Robert Shaw, Leonard Bernstein, Lucas Foss, and Richard Westenberg. His notable productions at Appalachian State University include Man of La Mancha, Cosi fan Tutte, Pirates of Penzance, and Amahl and the Night Visitors, among others.
Dr. Amaya's professional career in New York City included guest appearances with opera companies and extensive touring across the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. He has performed major roles alongside renowned artists such as Anna Moffo, Rosalind Elias, and Ashley Putnam, under conductors Richard Woitach and Anton Coppola. He has also studied with Beverly Johnson of the Juilliard School.
Dr. Amaya received his Doctor of Music and Master of Music in Voice from Florida State University, studying under Elena Nikolaidi. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from the State University of New York.
