Dreaming of traveling the world? Let the University Singers and Chamber Singers take you on an international trip - no passport or plane tickets required!

All you need is a free ticket (theschaefercenter.org/tickets) and your face covering - or the Hayes School of Music livestream link (music.appstate.edu/performances) - to enjoy music from around the globe on Friday, October 22, at 8:00pm

“We have been presenting an international-themed concert every four years since 2001, pausing only for COVID-19,” says Dr. Stephen Hopkins, conductor of the University Singers and Chamber Singers.

The concert is filled with love songs, lullabies, sacred pieces, and images of nature from the minds of composers around the world. The choirs will sing in many different languages. Translations are included in the program. See the program and performers here.

The University Singers and Chamber Singers will perform pieces from...

  • Venezuela
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Argentina
  • Romania
  • Brazil
  • Poland
  • The Philippines
  • Norway
  • India
  • Cuba
  • United States

“Learning all the different languages was the biggest challenge,” Dr. Hopkins says. Faculty, staff, and friends of the Hayes School of Music helped the choirs pronounce the text. Dr. Frank Borkowski, Dr. Belinda Forsyth, Dr. Witold Kosmala, Ms. Viktoria Marchive, Ms. Sofie Pedersen, and Dr. Régulo Stabilito all shared their knowledge of various languages.

The choirs are excited to sing together in a live format again. “Becoming an ensemble again after a 15-month absence was something we all had to work on together,” says Dr. Hopkins. The teamwork and camaraderie of the University Singers and Chamber Singers return to the stage at the Schaefer Center.

Hayes School of Music Dean James Douthit, DMA, notes, “Music has a way of bringing people and cultures together.  In this case the music itself is assembled from a number of countries and regions of the world, and our singers are coached on diction by members of our community.  This exchange of ideas and language makes music a truly international language.”
