Dr. James Stokes is a full professor of trumpet in the Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University. At Appalachian State, Dr. Stokes is the applied trumpet instructor, conductor of the Trumpet Choir, co-conductor of the Brass Choir, and coach for Brass Chamber Ensembles. He hosts and frequently performs at the William Adam International Trumpet Festival and collaborates with the Hayes School of Music faculty for An Appalachian Summer Festival.
Since 2001, Dr. Stokes has adjudicated for the National Trumpet Competition. He is a member of the International Trumpet Guild, performing as a soloist with the Mid-American Trumpet Ensemble in Sydney, Australia, during the 2010 ITG Conference. He frequently appears as an artist and clinician across the US and in Beijing, China. He is a founding member of the New River Brass Ensemble and an Artist/Clinician with the Conn/Selmer/Bach Corporation.
Dr. Stokes has performed with the Charlotte Symphony, Columbus Symphony Orchestra, ProMusica Chamber Orchestra, and Piedmont Wind Symphony, and is co-principal of the Symphony of the Mountains. He has worked with numerous popular artists, including John Williams, Doc Severinsen, Aretha Franklin, and the Canadian Brass. Dr. Stokes has premiered many works for trumpet, including Thomas Zugger's Sonata for Trumpet and Piano (2010), William Harbinson's Concerto for Trumpet and Winds (2011), and Scott Meister's trumpet quartet Games (2009). In 2015, he premiered Thomas Sleeper's Concerto for Trumpet and Chamber Orchestra. He has also performed George Naff's "Jubilant Dance and Serenade" at the North Carolina Music Educators Association conference and with the Appalachian Wind Ensemble and Symphony of the Mountains.
Dr. Stokes holds a Doctorate and Master’s in Performance from The Ohio State University and a Bachelor’s in Music Education from Indiana University, where he studied with William Adam.
