Dr. Hiu-Wah Au is a professor of music theory in the Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University. Dr. Au teaches courses in tonal harmony, aural skills, and counterpoint. Before joining the faculty at Appalachian State, she served as an assistant professor of music at Elizabethtown College.
Dr. Au’s research interests are Schenkerian theory, variation form, performance and analysis, and humor in music. She has presented papers at regional and international music theory conferences and has published articles in Gamut, Intégral, and Journal of Schenkerian Studies.
Dr. Au holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Music Theory and Master of Music in Piano Performance and Literature from the Eastman School of Music. She earned a bachelor of Arts from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
