NOTES FROM THE DEAN

September 8, 2017

As the new Dean of the Mariam Cannon Hayes School of Music, it is a privilege and pleasure to offer news and information on the many events and activities that occur in the School of Music.  Our students, faculty, and alumni are shaping the future of music through music education, music therapy, music industry, and music performance.  Each of my notes will highlight these contributions.  Since my arrival on July 17, I continue to be amazed at the professionalism, musicianship, and genuine sense of community that I experience on a daily basis.  You will find these notes to be a summary of those accomplishments and milestones within our community.

I would like to offer my appreciation to the many people that have played a role in my transition. Dr.  William Pelto, our former Dean, has been of great assistance in this process.  His enthusiasm for the Hayes School of Music is contagious and it is an honor to follow in his footsteps.  Dr. Jay Jackson, our accomplished and experienced Associate Dean has provided an encyclopedia of information and a spirit of collegiality that has greatly facilitated my orientation.  The staff have been eager to provide assistance that keeps the Hayes School running smoothly.  The faculty and students have been welcoming and eager to share their enthusiasm for their activities within the school.

Upon my arrival, I quickly learned that there are no “lazy days of summer” in the Hayes School of Music.  The Appalachian Summer Festival was a great introduction to our community and the many cultural treasures that the University and the Festival offer to the High Country.  The Hayes School of Music was happy to again be one of the sponsors of the Rosen Schaffel Competition.  This year’s contestants highlighted the stellar opportunity that is offered to musicians who have studied in the state of North Carolina.   The Cannon Music Camp concluded another successful year and plans are underway for the 50th anniversary of this unique, three-week opportunity for students to learn and grow as musicians.  Appalachian State University Marching Band members began arriving in early August. My observation of their rehearsal today offered proof that thousands of fans will have a thrilling show to watch at our football games.  I look forward to sharing notes with you each Friday and invite you to visit the Hayes School in the near future to discover how our community collaborates effortlessly to provide a stellar education for our students and a vital musical resource for the High Country and beyond.
