Fall colors have peaked in the High Country, and now we accelerate through the last weeks of the semester.  

 

FACULTY AND STAFF BUSINESS

* Susan McCracken and the Career Development Center have facilitated an exciting event for students to meet with Ms. Susan Kluttz, the Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Cultural and Natural Resources, on Tuesday November 1st from 3:30-4:30 in Rough Ridge Room 415 in the Student Union.

Secretary Kluttz has been asked to speak about career opportunities in the humanities and cultural affairs.  See Secretary Kluttz's bio at the following URL:

The Department of Cultural and Natural Resources includes twenty-seven historic sites, seven history museums, two art museums, the nation’s first state-supported symphony orchestra, the N.C. Museum of Art, the N.C. Museum of History, the State Archives, the State Historic Preservation Office, the Office of State Archaeology, the State Library, the N.C. Arts Council, the N.C. Zoological Park, the N.C. Aquariums, the N.C. State Parks, the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences, the Clean Water Management Trust Fund, and the Natural Heritage Program.  Many, if not most, of these entities offer internship experiences. 

* Chancellor Everts has announced the campus requirement that all faculty and staff participate in an online training module regarding interpersonal violence. Please complete the module prior to the December 16 deadline by following these instructions:

  • Go to: http://www.everfi.com/login and click Register
  • Under “Student/Learner,” enter the Registration Code: 7b2e5c30 to create your EverFi Account
  • Complete Part 1 of Haven for Faculty and Staff by December 16, 2016. This part takes about 45 minutes to complete, but it can be completed in multiple sittings.
  • After 30-45 days you will receive an invitation to complete Part 2 of Haven for Faculty and Staff, which must be completed by February 17, 2017. This part takes about 10 minutes to complete.

Jazz Ensemble II performs Tuesday, October 25, at 8 pm, in Rosen.

Collegium Musicum performs Wednesday, October 26, at 8 pm, in Rosen.

Blazing Bassoons performs Sunday, October 30, at 4 pm, in Rosen.

Saxophone Chamber Ensembles perform Sunday, October 30, at 8 pm, in Rosen.  

The Halloween Monster Concert occurs Monday, October 31, at 8 pm, in Rosen.

Dean's Advisory Council meets Tuesday, November 1, at 11 am.

Brass Studio Ensembles perform Tuesday, November 1, at 8 pm, in Rosen.

HSoM ON THE ROAD and AROUND CAMPUS (upcoming)

On October 29, HSoM music theorist Greg McCandless will serve as a panelist at the national meeting of the College Music Society to be held in Santa Fe, NM.  The panel, entitled "Engaging the CMS Task Force Recommendations: Preparing Undergraduate Music Students to Engage," includes faculty members from the University of South Florida and Arizona State University.  

On November 3, HSoM music theorist Greg McCandless will be presenting a jazz/rock phenomenology paper entitled "Attentional Cost and Positional Analysis: A Bassist's Perspective" at the national meeting of the Society for Music Theory in Vancouver, BC.  This paper is part of a panel titled "Positional Listening/Positional Analysis," which includes faculty members from the Eastman School of Music, the University of Kansas, and the University of Kentucky.

Over twenty HSoM students, faculty, and alumni will participate as presenters, officers, session chairs, and attendees for the annual conference of the College Music Society in Santa Fe, New Mexico, October 26-30. 

Many Hayes School of Music faculty and students will participate in the North Carolina Music Educators Association conference in Winston-Salem, on November 6-8. The HSoM will host an alumni reception on Monday, November 7, from 5:30-7 pm, in the "Graze" restaurant in the Marriott hotel. 

HSoM faculty guitarist Doug James has an active performance calendar in October as he collaborates with Pascuale Rucco in the Rucco-James Duo:

  • 10/24-25, Benevento Guitar Festival, Italy  (Concert and masterclasses) 
  • 10/29, Piccolo Teatro Caligula, Aversa, Italy  

 

 KUDOS AND OTHER NEWS AND EVENTS

HSOM executive assistant and MM-Voice alumna Lauren Hayworth has released an album of jazz standards entitled "Lullabies for Keira," recorded in the Robert F. Gilley Studio, engineered by HSOM alumnus Jesse Harvey, mastered by alumnus Joseph Diehl, and featuring HSOM faculty members Rob Falvo, Andy Page, Todd Wright, Doug James, Shawn Roberts, former faculty members Keith McCutchen, and students Andres Orench and Alyssa Kimpel.
