Faculty Announcements, August 24, 2015

Week Two of the semester brings glorious late summer days--Boone at its August finest!

Faculty and Staff Business

  • The annual HSoM faculty/staff/advisory board potluck picnic occurs on Friday, August 28, from 5 pm till sundown, at the Hayes property in Blowing Rock (460 Pinnacle Drive). Kim Wangler will contact us soon with details regarding the potluck, but please start planning your culinary contributions!
  • Our South African colleague Bhekani Buthelezi will return to the Hayes School of Music from September 4-18 with 14 members of the UniZulu Choral Society, University of Zululand's premier choir. The student choir is active in community outreach programs and sings western composed songs, African composed songs, folkloric music and opera choruses. The choir is an essential component at official University functions, and participates in provincial and National competitions. The schedule of activities will be available soon, and all HSOM faculty, students and friends are invited and encouraged to participate in this historic cultural exchange. There will be many opportunities to engage with our visitors, including concerts, informal gatherings, recording sessions and class meetings.
  • In case you missed it, here is an announcement from the QEP regarding various funding opportunities related to the University's global learning initiative:
  • To promote Global Learning for our students, the Office of the QEP invite faculty, staff, and administrators to apply for up to $8,000 in QEP funding under categories including:
    • Learning Communities
    • Education Abroad Training
    • Infusion of Global Content
    • Targeted Areas
    • Innovative Technologies, and
    • Other - if your proposal does not fall under the previous categories
  • This year, there is an online form to submit proposals at www.qep.appstate.edu/funding/funding-opportunity-application. Proposals and letters of recommendation are due before 12:00 noon on Friday, September 25, 2015. For detailed information about this funding opportunity, please see www.qep.appstate.edu/grants. Project funding is contingent upon the availability of financial resources. Please contact Dr. Garner Dewey at deweygg@appstate.edu or 828-262-7337, for additional information.
  • If you have not already done so, please submit your annual conflict of interest form as soon as possible. For most, this is a very quick process that simply demonstrates that individuals have identified any financial interests that could be construed as in conflict with University policy regarding decision-making. www.appstate.myresearchonline.org/air

Jay Jackson has worked throughout the summer to coordinate activities and logistics related to the event, and we will be providing information to HSoM colleagues as plans are finalized. Kudos and Other News and Events

  • Yamaha Corporation of America (YCA) announced in May that HSoM alumnus Roger Eaton has been appointed as that company's chief marketing director. Eaton joined Yamaha's Band & Orchestral Division in 1997 to create Dealer Development Services. In 2002, he also took on the responsibilities of marketing manager for Winds and Stringed Instruments. In 2003, Eaton relocated with the Band & Orchestral division to YCA's national headquarters in Buena Park, Calif., and was promoted to sales and marketing manager. A year later, he was appointed the division's director of marketing. For a complete article regarding Roger's promotion see the following URL: www.prweb.com/releases/2015/05/prweb12742667.htm
