Celebrations of the new academic year continue this week with ASU Convocation, including an address by Ishmael Beah, author of A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier. Saturday brings opening day of the football season and the debut of the 2015 Marching Mountaineers on Faculty-Staff Appreciation Day at the stadium. Then we'll relax a bit with a holiday on Monday to celebrate Labor Day.

In January of this year, a task force was put together to better understand the needs of the 21st century learner, specifically the students in the Hayes School of Music. The result of that conversation was a survey that has been distributed to all undergraduate music majors at ASU. The survey is COMPLETELY anonymous, so please have your students take a few minutes to have their voices heard. We currently have 160 responses and would like to have 200 by the middle of September. We will be presenting our findings at the national CMS meeting in November. Please refer your students to the following link: www.surveymonkey.com/r/hsom2015

  • Deadlines for submitting course proposals to the HSoM Curriculum and Assessment Committee are as follows: September 15, October 13, November 10.
  • Jenny Snodgrass will begin her role as Music Theory Coordinator in January, and she'd like to share the Graduate Coordinator position with a colleague for the Spring 2016 semester, preferably someone who will assume the full-time responsibility of Graduate Coordinator in July 2016. Please consider nominations and self-nominations for this position. We'll schedule an election for the November faculty meeting.
  • In case you missed it, here is an announcement from the QEP regarding various funding opportunities related to the University's global learning initiative:
  • To promote Global Learning for our students, the Office of the QEP invite faculty, staff, and administrators to apply for up to $8,000 in QEP funding under categories including:
    • Learning Communities
    • Education Abroad Training
    • Infusion of Global Content
    • Targeted Areas
    • Innovative Technologies, and
    • Other - if your proposal does not fall under the previous categories
  • This year, there is an online form to submit proposals at www.qep.appstate.edu/funding/funding-opportunity-application. Proposals and letters of recommendation are due before 12:00 noon on Friday, September 25, 2015. For detailed information about this funding opportunity, please see www.qep.appstate.edu/grants. Project funding is contingent upon the availability of financial resources. Please contact Dr. Garner Dewey at deweygg@appstate.edu or 828-262-7337, for additional information.
  • If you have not already done so, please submit your annual conflict of interest form as soon as possible. For most, this is a very quick process that simply demonstrates that individuals have identified any financial interests that could be construed as in conflict with University policy regarding decision-making. www.appstate.myresearchonline.org/air

  • ASU Convocation occurs Thursday, September 3, from 10 am till noon, in the Holmes Convocation Center.
  • The HSoM full faculty meets Friday, September 4, at 11 am, in BMC 225. Chancellor Everts will be our guest for the meeting. Provost Darrell Kruger will be our guest for the October 2 meeting.
  • Monday, September 7, is a University holiday (Labor Day).
  • The HSoM faculty's Evening of Encores occurs Tuesday, September 15, at 8 pm, in Rosen.

Looking Ahead

  • The UniZulu Choral Society, University of Zululand's premier choir, conducted by Bhekani Buthelezi, performs in concert on Wednesday, September 16, at 6 pm, in Rosen.
  • Guest artist bass-baritone Frank Ward performs in recital with pianist Deborah Yasutake on Friday, September 18, at 8 pm, in Rosen. Included on the recital will be a performance of Songs and Spirituals by H.T. Burleigh, with the Hayes School of Music Faculty String Quartet.
  • The annual HSoM Choral Workshop (for high school vocalists auditioning for all-state choirs) occurs Saturday, September 19.

HSoM On the Road and Around Campus (upcoming)

  • The Hayes School of Music has been invited by the North Carolina Music Educators Association to present four ensembles—University Singers, Jazz Ensemble I, Symphony Orchestra, and Wind Ensemble—in a showcase concert as part of the Association's annual conference on Monday, November 9, at 7:30 pm, in Winston-Salem's Stevens Center. Jay Jackson has worked throughout the summer to coordinate activities and logistics related to the event, and we will be providing information to HSoM colleagues as plans are finalized. I hope that all will consider attending the NCMEA conference and the concert, as a way of supporting our students and future recruitment efforts for the Hayes School.

Kudos and Other News and Events

  • Thanks go out to colleagues who helped make Friday's picnic at the Cannon-Hayes Estate such a success, especially Kim Wangler for coordinating food and setup, Brent Bingham for delivering the tables, and Kevin Richardson for returning the tables to the BMC. Once again, we were graced with gorgeous weather and fine culinary offerings. It continues to be a joyful way to gather at the beginning of the year and to celebrate Mrs. Hayes's contributions to the HSoM.
