Faculty Announcements, December 7, 2015

Faculty and Staff Business

  • This Saturday's Commencement festivities will include a reception for graduating HSoM seniors and master's students, their families, and HSoM faculty and staff, starting at 10:30 am, in the Hayes Lobby of Rosen Concert Hall. The Master's candidates' Hooding Ceremony will occur during the reception, starting at 11:30 am. Commencement for all graduating HSoM students will take place at 2 pm in the Holmes Convocation Center.
  • The HSoM spring semester retreat will occur on Friday, January 8, from 9:30 to noon, followed by a potluck lunch. Faculty and staff are invited to share refreshments provided in rm. 225 beginning at 9:30. A presentation and discussion concerning sustainability and the HSoM will follow at 10 pm. Then, from 10:30 to noon, the faculty will continue conversations regarding creativity, diversity, and integration in our curriculum, including follow-up on research conducted by Reeves Shulstad and Jenny Snodgrass and discussion about BMC scheduling. For the potluck lunch, we'd like to make it a "zero-waste" event, so please bring plates and tableware for your own use. As usual, the BMC's two kitchens will be available that morning.
  • Our colleague Dr. LaTanya Afolayan, who has served the HSoM's development activities for the past four years, has accepted a new position as Lamar University's Associate Vice President for University Advancement. Please stop by the HSoM office to sign a card for LaTanya, as we bid her best wishes for the new position and say "till we meet again!"
  • ASU Staff Senate is selling High Country Dining Cards (BOGO meals). The cards are sold to benefit staff/dependents scholarship awards for college. Please visit www.staffsenate.appstate.edu for a complete listing of participating restaurants. Contact Sydney or Janet in the HSoM office to purchase.

Kudos and Other News and Events

  • Congratulations and thanks go out to HSoM conductor Steve Hopkins for coordinating the 23rd annual Holiday Scholarship Concert, as well as to the innumerable other faculty, staff, and students who collaborated to make it such a success. This year's event brought in nearly $14,000 for scholarship support, including a record number of individual and business sponsorships. Many of us have reported numerous conversations with audience members, including many new to the event who were moved, inspired, and impressed by our students' performances.
  • Congratulations go out to our December degree recipients—nineteen undergraduates and four graduate students!

With best wishes for the holidays and the beginning of 2016,

Bill

**If you'd like to have something included in future iterations of these announcements, please send me an email with "announcements" in the subject line. Please feel free to send me information about artists (HSoM colleagues and others) who will collaborate in faculty recitals. My listings here sometimes miss those details. I'll be happy to add family/personal announcements, too. Please submit announcements as pdf's or in plain text, unformatted (no special spacing, bullets, etc.). Please include hyperlinks as appropriate.

**Please send information about upcoming off-campus performances and presentations by faculty and students. I'll include them in this "HSoM On the Road..." section.
