Faculty Announcements, February 17, 2015

As forecast last week, we had a bit of a winter storm blow through yesterday and today. Only mandatory University operations are running, with the rest of campus scheduled to open at 11 am today. Classes, which were canceled as of 3 pm yesterday, will resume at 2 pm today. Such is mountain weather.

Now we'll brace for the coldest days of the year, but our concerts will go on, including APPropos! tonight and the Axiom Brass Quintet tomorrow.

Faculty and Staff Business

  • Nominations and self-nominations are now open for a member of the tenured faculty to serve as the University's next Sharpe Chair. The position involves facilitating arts programming and advocacy for the Hiddenite Center in Hiddenite, NC, and comes with a $6,000 annual stipend, a 3-hour course release per semester, and programming funds related to the Hiddenite Center's activities. For information, please see the attachment. Please note that nominations are due by March 1, and self-nominations and completed applications are due by March 16.
  • Please announce to your classes that Summer Sessions offerings during Session I, May 26-June 25, will include many required HSoM courses, including Music Theory II and Aural Skills II, Music Theory IV and Aural Skills IV, Music Theory V, Piano Class II, and Piano Class IV. Other offerings will include many of our General Education courses in online formats—MUS 2011, MUS 2014, MUS 2018, and MUS 2023—and Introduction to Music Therapy MUS 2050, also online.
  • During the next months of the spring semester, the HSoM will follow Appalachian's university-wide procedure for annual full-time faculty evaluation and review. A form has been revised for the process. (Please see attached form in Word format.) I would like for us to use the following plan for completing the annual reviews:
    • Full-time faculty colleague makes 30-minute appointment with me, through Lauren (appointments to be scheduled starting February 16). I would ask first-year faculty to wait until Professional Development Committee activities have concluded later in the semester.
    • Colleague submits annual review form to Loren at least three days prior to scheduled meeting with me, with self-evaluation sections completed as applicable (teaching, research/creative activities, service, progress toward promotion and/or tenure, progress toward post tenure review, goal setting). Please feel free to use bulleted lists and brief prose as you complete the sections. Please add your last name to the file name when you submit it.
    • The HSoM office will add teaching activities (courses, sections, ensembles, studio lessons, chamber music coaching, etc.) and student evaluation data.
    • Following our meeting, I will return the completed form to you for your signature and additional comments (optional).
  • Please note that this procedure is for full-time faculty only and focuses on calendar year 2014. I would welcome part-time faculty to schedule 30-minute appointments with me during these next months, but again this year, part-time faculty won't use the standardized form.
