The HSoM has now hosted three of its scheduled five audition days, with the remaining two scheduled for Saturdays, February 14 and 28. Well over 300 prospective students will audition for us this year, as we work to identify the fall's incoming class.

Application deadline is March 15, 2015, 5 pm. Applicants must be full-time faculty members with tenure, on the tenure track, or with five years of full-time teaching experience at one or more of the institutions of the University of North Carolina. - The national NASM office provided the following information: On December 30, 2014, the Department of Transportation issued final regulations regarding the transport of musical instruments by U.S. commercial airlines. The regulations, printed in Section 14, Part 251 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), serve to implement the requirements set forth in Section 403 of the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012 (H.R. 658, 112th Congress). The federal regulations require all U.S.-based airlines to accept musical instruments as carry-on or checked baggage, provided certain conditions are met. The final rule is set to take effect on March 6, 2015. In addition, the Department of Transportation has created a set of supplemental resources on this topic. Guidance on this issue should be sought directly from the staff of the U.S. Department of Transportation.
- Nigel Davies, faculty development consultant in the Belk Library, offers the following information regarding the Technology for Teaching Fair: Enhancing Student Engagement and Learning scheduled for March 20th 12-4 pm. - During the next months of the spring semester, the HSoM will follow Appalachian's university-wide procedure for annual full-time faculty evaluation and review. A form has been revised for the process. (Please see attached form in Word format.) I would like for us to use the following plan for completing the annual reviews:
- Full-time faculty colleague makes 30-minute appointment with me, through Lauren (appointments to be scheduled starting February 16). I would ask first-year faculty to wait until Professional Development Committee activities have concluded later in the semester.
- Colleague submits annual review form to Loren at least three days prior to scheduled meeting with me, with self-evaluation sections completed as applicable (teaching, research/creative activities, service, progress toward promotion and/or tenure, progress toward post tenure review, goal setting). Please feel free to use bulleted lists and brief prose as you complete the sections. Please add your last name to the file name when you submit it.
- The HSoM office will add teaching activities (courses, sections, ensembles, studio lessons, chamber music coaching, etc.) and student evaluation data.
- Following our meeting, I will return the completed form to you for your signature and additional comments (optional).
- Please note that this procedure is for full-time faculty only and focuses on calendar year 2014. I would welcome part-time faculty to schedule 30-minute appointments with me during these next months, but again this year, part-time faculty won't use the standardized form.
