Many of us—students and faculty alike—from the Hayes School of Music are in Winston-Salem through tomorrow, participating in the annual conference of the North Carolina Music Educators Association. Watch next week's kudos for mention of specific presentations that occurred.

The annual conference of the North Carolina Music Educators Association occurs Sunday-Tuesday, November 6-8. The HSoM's annual reception will occur in the Graze Restaurant of the Winston-Salem Marriott from 5:30-7:00 pm.

Clarinet Choir performs Wednesday, November 9, at 6 pm, in the Recital Hall. 

String education specialists Bob Phillips and Pam Phillips will present a string pedagogy workshop on Friday and Saturday, November 11 and 12. To register for the Workshop, go to:  https://appstate.irisregistration.com/Form/Strings2016

Appalachian Opera Theatre presents  "A Weekend in the High Country," Friday and Saturday, November 11 and 12, at 8 pm, in Rosen Concert Hall.   

The Student Composers Recital occurs Sunday, November 13, at 8:00, in Rosen.

Brass Chamber Ensembles perform Monday, November 14, at 8 pm, in Rosen.

HSoM faculty pianist Junie Cho performs in recital Tuesday, November 15, at 8 pm, in Rosen.

Guitar Orchestra performs Sunday, November 20, at 8 pm, in Rosen.

HSoM ON THE ROAD and AROUND CAMPUS (upcoming)

Many Hayes School of Music faculty and students will participate in the North Carolina Music Educators Association conference in Winston-Salem, on November 6-8. The HSoM will host an alumni reception on Monday, November 7, from 5:30-7 pm, in the "Graze" restaurant in the Marriott hotel. 

HSoM faculty ethnomusicologist Laurie Semmes will participate as a panelist in "Music as Politics: Aesthetics, Participation, and Propaganda" on Monday, November 7, 6:00-8:00 p.m., in Rm. 114 Belk Information Commons. Other panelists will include Nancy Love, Christopher Bartel, and Joe Weiss.

KUDOS AND OTHER NEWS AND EVENTS

The HSoM Music Industry Studies program is highlighted as a cover article in the November issue of Mix Magazine. The industry publication focuses its article on the Recording and Production concentration, with special attention paid to issues of core musicianship, details of the degree program and its activities, and the new Solid State Logic sound board that was installed in May 2016. HSoM faculty clarinetist Andrea Cheeseman performed a piece by Mary Simoni (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) at the Third Practice Electroacoustic Music Festival in Richmond, Virginia this past weekend. Next weekend, she will return to Virginia to play works by Andrew Hannon and Jennifer Merkowitz (Otterbein College) at the Electroacoustic Barn Dance.

HSoM director of bands John Ross is a nominee for the University's Global Leadership Award, to be announced at the Global Symposium on Wednesday, November 16.

 The HSoM's student-run record label Split Rail Records has been awarded a $1000 grant by the Music and Entertainment Industry Educators Association (MEIEA) for the label's work to produce Village Vision and to produce its spring 2017 music festival.

 HSoM alumnus guitarist Justin Butler (B.M. '02, M.M. '04) has been awarded a Regional Artist Project (RAP) Grant by the North Carolina Arts Council. The $1,050 grant will aid in the publishing of his original compositions and songs. Justin was one of a handful of regional artists (visual, music, dance, literature, film) to be awarded the grant, which is funded by the North Carolina Arts Council, the United Arts Council of Catawba County, the Caldwell Arts Council, the Hiddenite Center of Alexander County, the Rock School Art Foundation in Burke County, the Burke Arts Council, and the McDowell Arts Council Association.

The ASU Gospel Choir, conducted this year by HSoM alumnus Davaughn Miller, has performed several times on campus during the past weeks, including a performance for the Black Arts Event on November 1 in the Plemmons Student Union, and an open rehearsal at the ASU Multicultural Center on November 3. The Choir will perform twice more this semester, here in the BMC—November 16 as guests of the Treble Choir, and in their own concert on November 30.
