Music Notes, February 2, 2015

The HSoM has now hosted three of its scheduled five audition days, with the remaining two scheduled for Saturdays, February 14 and 28. Well over 300 prospective students will audition for us this year, as we work to identify the fall's incoming class. 

Events

  • The HSoM Faculty Potpourri Concert occurs Tuesday, February 3, at 8 pm, in Rosen.
  • HSoM faculty trombonist Drew Leslie and tubist Bernard Flythe perform in recital on Sunday, February 8, at 2 pm, in Rosen.

Looking Ahead

  • HSoM jazz professor Todd Wright's Valentine Evening occurs Friday, February 13, at 8 pm, in Rosen.
  • The Appalachian Symphony Orchestra performs Sunday, February 15, at 2 pm, in Rosen.
  • The HSoM faculty vocal ensemble Appropos! performs Tuesday, February 17, at 8 pm, location TBA.

HSoM On the Road and Around Campus (upcoming)

  • The Appalachian Wind Ensemble will be the featured performing ensemble at the Virginia Band and Orchestra Director's Association All-District Band Clinic at the Holiday Inn Conference Center in Bristol, Virginia on Friday, February 6 at 5:30pm. On Saturday, February 7, the AWE will perform at the Cannon School in Concord, North Carolina at 1:00pm for several high school bands, including the Cannon High School Band, conducted by ASU Alum Daniel Knox. Both performances are free and open to the public.

 Kudos and Other News and Events

  • In late January, HSoM Music Industry Studies program director Kim Wangler, along with colleague Courtney Blankenship from Western Illinois University, presented a paper entitled "Gender Equality and Perception of Women in the Music Products Field" at the NAMM Show in Anaheim, California.
  • The HSoM's student-run label Split Rail Records has recently signed the band Rainbow Kitten Surprise to the label. Watch for an announcement about a CD release in the future.
