Music Notes, July 1, 2016

Cannon Music Camp 2016 has begun, and An Appalachian Summer Festival had its first events this week, so we've already reached the middle of the summer. Be sure to check the KUDOS section for recent highlight achievements by our students, alumni, and faculty. Here's wishing everyone a happy Fourth of July!

Summer Session II began on Thursday, June 30.

Cannon Music Camp concerts occur throughout the next two weeks, including the Finale Ensemble Concerts, Thursday-Saturday, July 14-16. (See cannon.appstate.edu for details.)

The HSoM Advisory Board meets Friday, July 8, at Wildacres Retreat Center in Little Switzerland, NC.

Looking Ahead

University Convocation will occur on Monday, August 15, at 10 am, in the Holmes Convocation Center.

Fall 2016 classes begin on Tuesday, August 16.

Kudos and Other News and Events

Cannon Music Camp enrollment has surpassed 200 students for the first time in many years. Congratulations to the faculty and staff of CMC for providing such a high-quality program for high school students throughout the region.

HSoM student Nicolo Iorio was one of five NC collegiate NAfME members who participated in the NAfME Hill Day events last week in Washington, DC. (See http://hillday.nafme.org/ for more info.) Appalachian was well represented in this event as James Daugherty, Maribeth Yoder-White, and Phillip Riggs included in the NC delegation.

HSoM Music Industry Studies alumnus Michael Alvarado continues to enjoy success in Us the Duo (managed by HSoM alumnus Adam Sensenbrenner), which is currently the opening act during The Pentatonix current world tour. HSoM Music Therapy intern Jasmine Tilden has been named one of two 2016 recipients of the $500 Edwina Eustis Dick Intern Scholarships awarded by the American Music Therapy Association.

HSoM Music Education student Mary Robert McGrath was awarded an Undergraduate Research Assistantship by Appalachian's Research Advisory Board for her work with Dr. Susan Mills on transcriptions of South African music.

HSoM Music Education Student Hunter Cox was awarded the 2016 Bill McCloud Scholarship for academic and musical achievement by the North Carolina Music Educators Association.

HSoM music education specialist Susan Mills published a webinar in early June sponsored by the National Association for Music Education's professional development series entitled "Diversify Your Portfolio".
