Music Notes, July 24, 2015

Summer is flying by. Cannon Music Camp has concluded its 47th season. An Appalachian Summer Festival ends next week.  Summer Session II has two more weeks. Starting August 10, the campus begins to fill with faculty and students returning for leadership and organization activities, followed by the beginning of classes on Monday, August 17.

Looking Ahead

  • Fall classes begin on Monday, August 17.
  • The fall ASU faculty/staff meeting will occur on Friday, August 28, at 2:30 pm, in the Schaefer Center.  HSoM Professors of piano Rodney Reynerson and Bair Shagdaron will open the meeting with a performance of Brahms Hungarian Dances for piano four hands.
  • ASU Convocation occurs Thursday, September 3, from 10 am till noon, in the Holmes Convocation Center.

HSoM On the Road and Around Campus (upcoming)

  • The Hayes School of Music has been invited by the North Carolina Music Educators Association to present four ensembles—University Singers, Jazz Ensemble I, Symphony Orchestra, and Wind Ensemble—in a showcase concert as part of the Association's annual conference on Monday, November 9, at 7:30 pm, in Winston-Salem's Stevens Center.

Kudos and Other News and Events

  • Cannon Music Camp's 47th season concluded with Finale Concerts throughout its third week, July 12-18. Once again, nearly 200 students from around the region enjoyed brilliant music making under the guidance of the CMC's faculty and staff, most of whom are HSoM faculty, staff, students, and alumni.  HSoM director of choral activities Steve Hopkins celebrated his fifteenth and last summer as the camp's director, and James Daugherty, Appalachian alumnus, and long-time dean of men for the CMC, and incoming president of the NCMEA, has begun his work as the new director. We'll all look forward three years to a grand 50th anniversary celebration of the camp.
  • HSoM graduate student bass Jacob Cook won third place honors in this summer's Rosen-Schaffel Competition for Young and Emerging Artists during An Appalachian Summer Festival. 2015 HSoM  alumna soprano Allison Deters was also one of the five finalists for the competition.

With best wishes for the remaining weeks of summer,

-Bill
