Music Notes, March 29, 2015

Following four performances of The Marriage of Figaro, the HSoM presents a night of faculty artistry and fun on Monday (The Faculty Follies) and two evenings of student chamber performances, and then prepares for the upcoming four-day holiday weekend.

  • The HSoM "Faculty Follies" occurs Monday, March 30, at 8 pm, in Rosen.
  • Brass Studio Ensembles perform Tuesday, March 31, at 8 pm, in Rosen.
  • Woodwind Chamber Ensembles perform Thursday, April 2, at 8 pm, in Rosen.
  • Saturday-Tuesday, April 4-7, are university-wide holidays.

  • The HSoM Music Therapy Student Association Benefit Concert "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes" occurs Wednesday, April 8, at 8 pm, in Rosen.
  • Jazz Ensembles I and II perform Thursday, April 9, at 8 pm, in the Schaefer Center.
  • The HSoM Guitarfest Gala Concert occurs Thursday, April 9, at 8 pm, in Rosen. $

  • Blazing Bassoons perform Sunday, April 12, at 8 pm, in Rosen.
  • The Saxophone Chamber Recital occurs Monday, April 13, at 8 pm, in Rosen.
  • Brass Chamber Ensembles perform Tuesday, April 14, at 6 pm, in the Recital Hall.
  • HSoM faculty composer Andrew Hannon's works will be performed in recital on Tuesday, April 14, at 8 pm, in Rosen.
  • Collegium Musicum performs on Wednesday, April 15, at 8 pm, in Rosen.

HSoM On the Road and Around Campus (upcoming)

  • The Steely Pan Steel Band will perform for community events twice during April:
  • On Saturday, April 11, from 4-5 pm, the SPB will play during the NC Odyssey of the Mind state competition at the Holmes Center, and they'll perform for ASU's Diversity Day on Tuesday, April 14 at 4:00 - 5:00 in the Summit Trail Solarium in the Plemmons Student Union. 

Kudos and Other News and Events

HSoM Music Therapy students and faculty attended the conference of the Southeastern Region of the American Music Therapy Association in Columbia, SC March 26-28. HSoM faculty music therapist Christine Leist served as first vice-president of the Southeastern Region of AMTA, and HSoM students brought home both of the $599 regional intern scholarships: Senior Krystal Heffinger won the undergraduate scholarship and graduate student Rebecca Gildea won the equivalency student scholarship. Faculty, students, and alumni actively represented the Hayes School of Music through the following presentations:

  • Dr Melody Schwantes, MMT '07: "Transformative Mixed Methods Research Designs: Clinical Applications in Music Therapy"
  • Lecturer Katurah Christenbury, MMT '10: "I Will Follow You: The Combined Use of Songwriting and Art to Promote Healing in a Child Who Has Been Traumatized"
  • Alumna Shelby Rosenblum, MMT '14: "Brief Music Therapy Interventions with Mandated College Students"
  • For the research poster session graduate student Alexa Dorris, MMT '15, was selected to give an oral presentation of "Music Therapy When Death Is Imminent: A Phenomenological Inquiry"
  • Graduate student Sarah Renshaw, MMT '15, presented a research poster, "How Music Therapists Use Rap Music with Adolescents and Young Adults: A Survey"

HSoM director of Music Industry Studies Kim Wangler presented a paper, "Gender Equity Perceptions in the Music Industry" to the national Music & Entertainment Industry Educators Association (MEIEA) conference on March 23, in Austin, Texas.
