
Dr. Lindsay J. Fulcher is Assistant Professor of String Music Education in the Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University. Her primary teaching responsibilities are string pedagogy courses and working with the Appalachian Community Orchestra. She earned her Bachelor of Music Education from Baldwin Wallace University where she helped run an after-school violin program for elementary students in inner city Cleveland. She earned her Master’s and Ph.D. in Music Education from Pennsylvania State University while on a full teaching assistantship.
Before starting graduate work, Dr. Fulcher taught high school orchestra in North Carolina where her students earned high ratings at local, national, and international festivals. As a teacher, and in graduate school, she kept a small private studio. She still loves performing on viola and has been a guest conductor at festivals and summer camps in Colorado, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. She has also presented sessions for teachers at the National ASTA Conference (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2020, 2021, 2025), Colorado ASTA Summer Conference (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020), Colorado Music Educators Association Conference (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2025), and Music Educators Association Conferences in Indiana, Kansas, Pennsylvania, and Texas. Additionally, she has prepared and presented a number of class seminars for undergraduate music education majors on topics including: technology in the music classroom, technology specific to the orchestra classroom, technique differences between violin and viola, implementing the ASTA Curriculum, and recruiting string students.
Dr. Fulcher’s research interests include female leadership in music, string method books, string pedagogy, string repertoire, and technology in ensembles and music classrooms. Her dissertation looked at use of several forms of technology in musical communities. Professional affiliations include ASTA, NAfME, CMEA, and Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society.
Before joining the Hayes School of Music in 2025 she was Associate Professor and Head of Music Education at the University of Northern Colorado (2016-2025) and Director of the String Project there. She also held a one-year position in Music Education at Ball State University from 2015-2016.
