By Anna Kimbro

The annual Hayes School of Music Endowed Scholarship Recital will be held Thursday, Feb. 1, at 8 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Broyhill Music Center at Appalachian State University. Admission is free, reception to follow.

This year’s recital will feature performances by ten recipients of the most prestigious scholarships in the Hayes School of Music. In anticipation of the recital, Dean James Douthit said, “The Hayes School of Music provides opportunities for its students to link their passion in music to viable and fulfilling professional career paths. The annual Endowed Scholarship Recital not only allows our students an opportunity to share their talents with the audience but also to celebrate the many opportunities provided by our generous donors. Students pursue their careers in music because of their passion for performing and sharing their art, and this recital allows the audience to share this joy and delight in music with our scholarship-winning performers.”

The 2017-2018 recipients of the Hayes Young Artist scholarship are senior music therapy major Rachel Davis from Satellite Beach, Florida, bassoon; junior music education and music performance major Grayson Milholin from Greensboro, baritone; sophomore music performance major Thommasaht Nhouyvanisvong from Greensboro, guitar; and freshman music performance major Nicholas Lipsette from Fayetteville, trumpet. The 2017-2018 Elmer R White Endowed Jazz Trumpet scholar is sophomore music performance major Robert McCormac from Asheville, trumpet. Dr. Lynn White established this scholarship in memory of her husband, Dr. Elmer R. White, who enjoyed a 37-year career at Appalachian as a distinguished professor, researcher, performer, conductor and mentor to hundreds of students. Dr. Lynn White said, “Both my husband and I enjoyed teaching for more than 35 years in the Hayes School of Music. We established these endowed scholarships in appreciation of and pride in our wonderful music students, colleagues and administrators during our careers. The recipients of these awards exemplify the continued excellence of the Appalachian State University Hayes School of Music.”
