
Dr. Alicia Chapman serves as an associate professor of oboe in the Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University, where she has been a faculty member since 1999. At Appalachian State University, Dr. Chapman directs the Collegium Musicum and coordinates woodwind chamber music. She is a founding member of Harmonia Baroque, the Hayes School of Music's resident early music ensemble, which performs historically informed music throughout North Carolina and Virginia.
Dr. Chapman serves as principal oboist for the Asheville Symphony, Symphony of the Mountains, and she performs on historical oboes with the North Carolina Baroque Orchestra. Her extensive career includes 29 years as principal oboist with the Harrisburg Symphony and eight seasons as an English horn player with the Greensboro Symphony. She has held principal positions with various orchestras including the Bridgeport Symphony, Stamford Chamber Orchestra, and Connecticut Grand Opera.
Dr. Chapman has performed with prestigious ensembles such as New York Philomusica, the Manhattan Chamber Orchestra, and New York Kammermusiker, with recordings on the Dorian and Newport Classics labels. In New York, she played as an extra and substitute with the Metropolitan Opera, toured nationally with the New York City Opera, and was a semi-finalist in the 1995 Lucarelli International Solo Oboe Competition.
A Vermont native, Alicia Chapman began her oboe studies with Neil Boyer at the University of Vermont. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the City University of New York, as well as Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the Mannes College of Music. Her principal teachers in New York were Elaine Douvas, Ronald Roseman, and Mark Hill, with additional studies in Baroque oboe with Virginia Brewer, Gail Hennessy, Washington McClain, and Marc Schachman.
