It's Leap Day, quite an interesting anomaly in our calendar, though it mainly affects those with birthdays. One colleague here in the HSoM just celebrated a 16th "real" birthday! We're in our last week of classes before Spring Break, with concerts scheduled through Wednesday night (see Events).
Faculty and Staff Business
- As our three faculty searches move forward, I would recommend that all colleagues review the attached documents that EDC director Bindu Jayne has provided for us regarding unconscious bias and other search-related topics.
- The Watauga Humane Society's Tour for Life event to be held April 10, from 12-5 at the Boone Mall, is looking for small ensembles to perform. This is an annual event sponsored in conjunction with the North Shore Animal League to promote interest in animal care and adoptions. The sponsors do not have a budget to pay performers, but they report that the event is well attended.
- Performances and other events will occur in the parking lot at the Boone Mall; there will be numerous rescue units and humane shelters with animals for adoption, some vendors for animal related items, etc. They anticipate 30- and 60-minute time slots for performers. There will be a small stage with sound equipment. In the event of bad weather, they anticipate moving into the Mall itself.
- If you have interested groups (chamber ensembles and the like), please contact Dr. Charlie Duke (ASU Dean emeritus from the Reich College of Education) directly via email at whs.duke1945@gmail.com or by phone at 828-265-4558.

Kudos and Other News and Events
- HSoM music education student Mitchell Townley has been accepted as a semi-finalist for the National Trumpet Competition for the 2nd consecutive year. He will compete with other undergraduate trumpeters from across the country. The competition will be held on the Columbus State University (Columbus, GA) campus in March. He will perform Intrada by Arthur Honegger.
- Congratulations and thanks go out to HSoM colleagues who provided leadership and participated in events of this past weekend's Western Regional Orchestra festival.
- Thanks, also, to HSoM colleagues and students who made this year's audition season so successful. Saturday featured our fifth and final audition day, as well as our Hayes Young Artist Competition. To date, we've heard 423 auditions in all areas of study, including our first round of online submissions from prospective voice students, a record number for the HSoM. Now we'll look forward to learning who will join us as members of the Fall class of 2016.
With best wishes for the eighth week of the spring 2016 semester,
Bill

**If you'd like to have something included in future iterations of these announcements, please send me an email with "announcements" in the subject line. Please feel free to send me information about artists (HSoM colleagues and others) who will collaborate in faculty recitals. My listings here sometimes miss those details. I'll be happy to add family/personal announcements, too. Please submit announcements as pdf's or in plain text, unformatted (no special spacing, bullets, etc.). Please include hyperlinks as appropriate.
**Please send information about upcoming off-campus performances and presentations by faculty and students. I'll include them in this "HSoM On the Road..." section.
