We're at the midpoint of the summer break, but anyone who has been here in the Broyhill Music Center recently knows that we're anything but quiet at this time of year. Summer Session I ends today, with Session II beginning next week; Cannon Music Camp has enjoyed its first week of the 49th season; and An Appalachian Summer Festival has begun.

KUDOS AND OTHER NEWS AND EVENTS
HSoM musicologist Reeves Shulstad has been selected to participate in the 2017 UNC BRIDGES Academic Leadership for Women program.
HSoM director of orchestral activities Mélisse Brunet has been selected to participate during November 2017 in Dallas Opera's Hart Institute for Women Conductors. She is one of six participants selected from a world-wide pool that numbered more than 150 applicants.
This will be my last set of notes and announcements as I end my eight-year tenure as dean here in the Hayes School. On August 1, I will begin my new role as executive director of The College Music Society, a position that will allow me to telecommute approximately 75% of the time from here in Boone, traveling to the home office in Missoula and to other gatherings of the Society approximately once per month.
I welcome the HSoM's new dean, Dr. James Douthit, confident that his administrative skill, musical artistry, and humanity will facilitate many great successes in the next chapter of this spectacular school. I leave with gratitude for this opportunity and with best wishes for fantastic music making in the BMC for many years to come.
Sincerely,
Bill
