Dr. James Douthit is Professor of Piano at the Mariam Cannon Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University, where he works with pianists seeking to refine their artistry, technical command, and professional direction. After eight years as Dean of the Hayes School of Music, he has returned full-time to the studio and recital stage, bringing with him a deep commitment to individual mentorship and the development of complete musicians.
An accomplished performer and pedagogue, Dr. Douthit has appeared in recitals, chamber music performances, and as a concerto soloist across the United States, Austria, Poland, China, and Great Britain. His playing is especially noted for its clarity of structure, tonal depth, and expressive range, with particular affinity for the works of Theodor Leschetizky. Highlights include a celebrated recital in Łańcut, Poland, and a performance of Beethoven’s “Emperor” Concerto with the Southwest Symphony.
In the studio, Dr. Douthit works closely with pianists on the integration of technique, sound, and musical imagination. His teaching emphasizes efficient technical solutions, stylistic awareness, and the development of an individual artistic voice—preparing students not only for high-level performance, but for meaningful and sustainable careers in music. His approach draws on a broad background in performance, chamber music, and pedagogy, as well as ongoing engagement with the evolving professional landscape for musicians.
Dr. Douthit is also a frequent pedagogy clinician and has published in Clavier, The American Music Teacher, and The National Piano Pedagogy Forum. His students benefit from a studio environment that values high standards, thoughtful collaboration, and a clear path toward artistic and professional growth. Douthit was inducted into the Steinway Teachers Hall of Fame in 2023.
