It's Leap Day, quite an interesting anomaly in our calendar, though it mainly affects those with birthdays. One colleague here in the HSoM just celebrated a 16th "real" birthday! We're in our last week of classes before Spring Break, with concerts scheduled through Wednesday night (see Events).

February brings many opportunities to champion young and aspiring musicians. This past weekend, we welcomed middle school and high school students and their directors to the NW District Band festival, and this next weekend, the Western Region Orchestra festival and Hayes Young Artist Competition occur here on campus.

Today was a snow and ice day at Appalachian, with all classes canceled and the University on "Condition 1" status for inclement weather. Typical of mountain weather, we'll be in the 50s on Saturday.

The opposites of a Boone winter are obvious this month as temperatures change from nearly 60 degrees last week to a predicted high of 17 (F) on the day after tomorrow. In spite of the cold, great music making continues in the Broyhill Music Center as HSoM ensembles gear up for first performances of the semester.
