Faculty Announcements, March 23, 2015

Spring is here!

Faculty and Staff Business

  • HSoM faculty and staff members are eligible for two tickets each to a performance of The Marriage of Figaro. Tickets can be picked up at the Schaefer Center box office or at the door.
  • Friday's full HSoM faculty meeting will include two topics:
    • Chancellor Everts has asked to meet with HSoM faculty and staff at our September 4 full-faculty meeting. To allow her the full fifty minutes with us, I have proposed to the Dean's Advisory Council that we amend our normal School Personnel Committee procedures, and hold those elections at our April 24 meeting (next month).
    • HSoM music therapist Cathy McKinney has submitted a proposal for an Off Campus Scholarly Assignment (OCSA) for Fall 2015 (see attachment). Please review her proposal, and consider a motion to approve. I would note that she and I have discussed means of meeting teaching demands, in ways that will minimize costs for replacement/adjunct pay.
  • Get creative! The Appalachian State University Sustainability Council's Sustainability in the Arts grants application deadline is April 3. Grants totaling $2500 will be awarded. Council encourages non-traditional applicants from any discipline. The purpose of the grants is to raise awareness of sustainability through art. The competition is open to students, faculty, staff and administration and welcomes any media. Projects will be judged on the following criteria: reach, interdependence, sustainability of tools, aesthetic impact, and ability of project to create human or financial capital so the work is self-sustaining. Watch the video call here. http://sustain.appstate.edu/susty
  • Performance coordinator Scott Kallestad has confirmed our Commencement speaker. Mr. Barry Green will present the HSoM Commencement address on Saturday, May 9, and he'll also present a lecture/workshop on Friday afternoon, May 8, entitled "The inner Game of Music and Bringing Music to Life." Please see attachment for Mr. Green's bio.

**If you'd like to have something included in future iterations of these announcements, please send me an email with "announcements" in the subject line. Please feel free to send me information about artists (HSoM colleagues and others) who will collaborate in faculty recitals. My listings here sometimes miss those details. I'll be happy to add family/personal announcements, too. Please submit announcements as pdf's or in plain text, unformatted (no special spacing, bullets, etc.). Please include hyperlinks as appropriate.

**Please send information about upcoming off-campus performances and presentations by faculty and students. I'll include them in this "HSoM On the Road..." section.
