Barbara and Lawrence Freiman Residency

THE BARBARA AND LAWRENCE FREIMAN GUEST ARTIST RESIDENCY ENDOWMENT supports an annual residency for a distinguished soloist or ensemble in the Hayes School of Music. Because every degree program in the School includes performance requirements, these residencies play a vital role in developing the musicianship students need for diverse professional paths. Engaging with artists from beyond the University is an essential part of this educational mission, offering students direct exposure to professional practice, artistry, and mentorship.

Barbara Freiman, her late husband Lawrence “Larry” Freiman, and their family have been devoted advocates for education, the arts, and community engagement whose philanthropy has made a lasting impact at Appalachian State University and throughout the High Country. United by a belief in the transformative power of learning and creative expression, they have supported initiatives that expand student opportunity, strengthen academic programs, and enrich the region’s cultural life. Barbara continues to honor that shared legacy through her ongoing commitment to fostering excellence for generations to come. Barbara Freiman was awarded an Honorary Doctoral Degree at the December 2025 Commencement.
