FACULTY AND STAFF BUSINESS

Questions arose at last week's faculty meeting regarding HSoM policies for student recitals. Please see pp. 79-81 of the 2016-17 Student Handbook for complete policy documentation. Specifically, it clarifies that degree recitals may occur off campus if approved by area faculty.  

As we look toward the Labor Day weekend and the beginning of September, we're already fully at work here in the Hayes School, with concerts, presentations, exams, and other musical activities to start soon. The HSoM once again counts just under 500 majors and nearly four times that number of non-majors who participate in ensembles and other music courses.

The second week of classes begins with five-star weather—clear skies, mid-70s, light breeze, and a hint of fall during the cool evening. Classes, lessons, and ensembles are up and running, with students making final registration changes today. We'll look forward to the start of the concert season next Tuesday, as faculty bassoonist Jon Beebe kicks off our faculty recital series. (See Events.)

Yesterday's Convocation ceremony welcomed our new freshman class, who heard from this year's common reading author, Jon Ronson.  And today was the first day of classes for Appalachian's 2016-17 academic year.  Ensemble auditions conclude today, and all things musical have begun here in the Broyhill Music Center.
