Welcome to the Hayes School of Music

The Hayes School of Music prepares young musicians for professional lives as performers, composers, music educators, music therapists, conductors, and music industry professionals, ensuring the next generation of musical leadership for the state, region, and nation. Noted for quality instruction by national and internationally recognized faculty musicians, the school offers seven undergraduate degree programs and three graduate level programs.

The Hayes School of Music also engages the local and regional community with more than 190 concerts each year, giving students valuable performance experience. The school offers summer workshops for teachers, year-round musical instruction for people of all ages through our community music school and the renowned Cannon Music Camp for outstanding high school musicians.

Hayes Young Artist Competition 2013

$30,000 Scholarship ($7,500 for four years)

The Hayes School of Music is excited to announce the return of the Hayes Young Artist Competition for the 2013-2014 academic year. Students auditioning for acceptance into the School, as well as for scholarship consideration, have the opportunity to be a part of this competition program, which will result in the winner being awarded a scholarship of seven thousand five hundred dollars ($7,500). This scholarship is renewable for up to four years.

William PeltoWelcome to Appalachian State University and the Mariam Cannon Hayes School of Music! I feel very honored to be serving in my seventh year at the Hayes School, following in the footsteps of the School's visionary first deans, Dr. Arthur Unsworth and Dr. William Harbinson.
