Closure

Reviewing the notated rhythmic phrases on the board, help students begin to compose alternate lyrics –such as "when I first came to this house" or " When I rode the bus today". Discuss and help students create rhythmic accompaniment, using patterns from the song or their own patterns after reviewing those on board. Use percussion instruments to accompany the new lyrics. (Optional - create new melodies as well.)

Evaluation

  • Look for identification of work songs, game songs – both a kind of folk songs.
  • Look for performance of folk song with original lyrics.
  • Look for evidence of notating and using rhythmic patterns in new composition.
