Closure

Provide the list of ballad titles from the resources page for students to consider. Ask students to create and write down ideas for a ballad in one of the major ballad categories (tragedy, crime, etc.) . Students do not have to compose entire ballad, but should list a tragedy or hardship situation and a repeated phrase or refrain that can be used in their song.

Optional: Have students develop their ballads using familiar tunes for melodies, or simple chordal accompaniment on autoharp, dulcimer or guitar.

Homework Assignment

Folklore in your family: Ask students to talk with an older relative (grandparents are great for this assignment) or family friend about songs and games that were familiar to them as young people. Write down the names of songs or games and bring the list to the next class.
