Today is another "snow day" at Appalachian, with classes canceled till 2 pm. For those of you off the mountain, picture a steady fall of powder, not a puff of wind, all sound muffled slightly by the insulating accumulation. And now the clouds have lifted, with bits of blue sky visible intermittently. The forecast calls for improving conditions this afternoon and evening, so performances by guest artists Lynn Mackey and David Gee (Recital Hall, 6 pm) and the Appalachian Repertory Orchestra (Rosen, 8 pm) will occur as scheduled.

As forecast last week, we had a bit of a winter storm blow through yesterday and today. Only mandatory University operations are running, with the rest of campus scheduled to open at 11 am today. Classes, which were canceled as of 3 pm yesterday, will resume at 2 pm today. Such is mountain weather.

Now we'll brace for the coldest days of the year, but our concerts will go on, including APPropos! tonight and the Axiom Brass Quintet tomorrow.

T.S. Eliot said that "April is the cruelest month," but plenty in the High Country would beg to differ as February swings from springlike to harsh winter in a matter of days. That's what happens this week, with temperatures hovering around 60 degrees yesterday and plummeting to a daytime high of 10 degrees next Sunday. It's a great week to be a Mountaineer (as long as you've got good cold-weather gear)!
