The Hayes School of Music once again celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month with a new series of concerts by composers from Spain and Latin America. This year we are going all out for perhaps our greatest diversity of musical and poetic offerings. Programs will include almost 20 composers, from today and yesterday, with an emphasis on Catalonia — that Spanish region with a musical tradition stretching back to the 12th century. We also offer you poetry readings, including la poesia by the great Argentine, Jorge Luis Borges, and that chronicler of the Spanish Civil War, Federico García Lorca.
At the concerts you will hear the work of 19th and early 20th century composers, from Spain, Mexico, Cuba, and South America: Federico Mompou, Antônio Carlos Jobim, Alberto Ginastera, Enrique Granados, Joaquín Rodrigo, Hector Villa-Lobos, Ernesto Lecuona, Fernando Orbradors, and Isaac Albéniz. And music by living composers: Leo Brouwer, Juan López-Maya, José Luis Merlin, Jorge Muñiz, and Enric Palomar.
We hope you will share in the depth of art coming from poets and musicians of Hispanic traditions: syncopated rhythm and song, evocations of heritage, music, and poetry come together during National Hispanic Heritage Month at the Hayes School of Music.
The concerts are free and open to the public and take place on September 25th and October 2nd, 2022 at 4pm in Rosen Concert Hall on the campus of Appalachian State University. They can also be viewed via the Hayes School of Music live-streamed Performances page.
