A select group of singers, the Opera Workshop designs, plans, and produces a musical production or opera scenes program each semester.
Currently Directed by Visiting Professor of Voice Dr. Tyler Young, Appalachian Opera Theatre introduces students to the performance of operatic literature. Auditions are required, as the expected performance level is of the highest caliber.
Recently performed operas at Appalachian include The Marriage of Figaro by Mozart, Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss, Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel, Gianni Schicchi by Puccini, and The Bartered Bride by Smetana. The Opera Workshop has regular rehearsals on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 – 5:00 pm, but participants can expect additional rehearsals in preparation for the opera scene and full productions. Students may receive one hour of academic credit by registering for MUS 1113: Opera Workshop.
