A message from the director: 

"I BELIEVE THAT EVERYONE DESERVES THE OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE ACCESS TO MUSIC INSTRUCTION AND PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES IN THEIR COMMUNITY. THE COMMUNITY MUSIC SCHOOL IS A PLACE FOR EVERYONE TO EXPLORE, CREATE, AND MAKE MUSIC! I AM EXCITED TO BE A PART OF A COMMUNITY THAT EMBRACES MUSIC AND THE ARTS! MOVING FORWARD, I HOPE WE CAN CONTINUE TO ADDRESS ISSUES OF AFFORDABILITY AND ACCESSIBILITY IN THE MUSICAL ARTS. I AM INSPIRED AND MOTIVATED BY OUR STUDENTS OF ALL AGES HERE AT CMS AND HONORED TO BE A PART OF THIS STRONG, SUPPORTIVE, AND ART-FULL COMMUNITY."

Dr. Nicole Sonbert, Director of the Community Music School and a member of the voice faculty at Appalachian State University is recognized for work as an administrator, performer, clinician, guest presenter, adjudicator, and guest conductor. She is a graduate of University of Kentucky with a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance. Her research area encompasses Evaluating Appropriate Repertoire for Developing Singers: An African-American Art Song Anthology. Sonbert was previously the Youth & Family Programs Manager for Seattle Opera, as well as a part of the voice faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 2006, she was the recipient of the "My Teacher, My Hero" award, honoring her as a teacher and mentor for young voices. 

Kaitlyn Jones, Website and Communications Manager

Kaitlyn Jones is a Senior at Appalachian State University majoring in Choral Music Education. She is from Chapel Hill, North Carolina where she developed her passion for music in highschool. Kaitlyn is an active member of the Student Advisory Council for the Hayes School of Music, ACDA, NaFME, and the student representative for the College of Music Society for the Mid-Atlantic Region. She is looking forward to growing and learning with the Community Music School!

Miranda Tedder, Administrative Assistant 

Miranda Tedder is a Junior at Appalachian State University. She is pursuing a degree in General Music Education and Choral Music Education with a minor in Special Education.  She is from North Wilkesboro, North Carolina where she developed her passion for music in her middle school years. Miranda is an active member of NaFME is a Soprano in the Chancel Choir at First Presbyterian Church of Boone. She is looking forward to growing and learning with the Community Music School!

Madison Batton, Administrative Assistant

Madison Batton is a first year at Appalachian State University. She is studying Music Education with a concentration in Choral Music. She hails from Gray’s Creek, North Carolina. In 2019, she graduated from Gray’s Creek High School, where she was inspired to pursue Music Education. Madison is excited to be a part of the Community Music School Team and share her passion for music with others!

Dylan Hickok, Administrative Assistant

Dylan is a Freshman is an Instrumental Music Education Major at Appalachian State University. He is from Spivey’s Corner, North Carolina where he found his love for music in his high school band program. Dylan is the acting historian of the National Band Association Appalachian Chapter. He the Sousaphone Squad Leading in the Marching Mountaineers. He is excited to begin his journey with the Community Music School!

 Nathan Trivette, Administrative Assistant

Nathan Trivette is a Freshman at ASU from Hamptonville, NC. He is studying Music Industry with a concentration in recording and production. Nathan has experience managing social media for small businesses. He also has experience in the areas of filmmaking and video editing.

Rachel Oglesby, Student Volunteer

Rachel Oglesby is a freshman at Appalachian State University majoring in Instrumental Music Education. Although her focus is classical percussion, her first love is choir. She is an Alumna of Capital City Girls Choir at Meredith College in Raleigh, having sung for Amy Davis (ASU MM ’93) and Dr. Fran Page for 9 years. Rachel is from Wake Forest, North Carolina, and is thrilled to be a part of the Community Music School.

 Kendrick Davis, Student Volunteer

Kendrick is a first year Instrumental Music Education Major at Appalachian State University.  He is from Gaffney, South Carolina, where he discovered a calling for teaching music. He is an active member in the National Band Association Appalachian Chapter. He is looking forward to being a part of the Community Music School’s prosperity.

Seanna DeVine, Student Volunteer

Seanna DeVine is a Senior at Appalachian State University majoring in General Music Education. She is from Winston Salem, North Carolina where she developed a passion for teaching music through high school band and chorus programs as well as teaching Sunday School. Seanna is an active member of NaFME, Sigma Alpha Iota-International Women’s Music Fraternity and is a Student Ambassador for the Hayes School of Music. She is looking forward to growing and learning with the Community Music School!
